How to Set Up a Web Host
Every Web site on the Internet needs to be hosted somewhere. Typically, they’re hosted on machines called ‘servers’ that are hooked up to the Web and allow people to access them. Companies that offer server space for people to host their Web sites are called Web hosts.
There are huge Web hosting companies and there are tiny Web hosting companies. Some are more expensive than others. On the norm, the cost of having your Web site hosted for a year is around $100. Some companies offer specials where its free the first year, or discounted the first year, etc. etc. But plan on spending around $100 a year.
Getting Started
If you already have a domain name in mind and are ready to set up your Web site, your first step is to select a Web host. Common Web hosts include Host Gator, Host Monster, Siteground, GoDaddy, Yahoo! and thousands of others. Most of these companies offer similar services at similar prices. Here’s how to get started.
- Pick a Web host company you like by Googling ‘Web host’.
- On their front page they’ll walk you through the process of reserving your domain name and setting up your Web host package. More than likely you’ll just go with their basic package. You can pay for it in 1-year, 2-year or 3-year increments (or more). You’ll save more money by paying for longer increments, but go with what feels comfortable. You’re now bound to this company and can always move your site to another host at anytime (forfeiting your payment, however).
- When you’ve reserved your domain name and paid for the Web hosting package, your new host will e-mail you instructions on how to use the Web host to set up your site.
- Take time to review their tutorials on how to set up and maintain your site.
What I Do
- Go to Host Gator and click on ‘View Web Hosting Plans’.
- Select Hatchling Plan if this is your first site.
- Click on ‘Register New Domain’. If you already have an existing domain, click on ‘I will use my existing domain.’
- Go through the registration process.
- After you’ve paid, you’ll receive an e-mail on how to set up your Web site.
